Skip Bayless Pitches Wild Lincoln Riley Replacement if USC Makes HC Switch

    By Michael Gallagher,

Lincoln Riley’s first two seasons as head coach of the USC Trojans have been a mixed bag.

Despite having No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick Caleb Williams for two years, Riley mustered just a 19-8 record in 2022 and 2023 with just a 1-1 record in bowl games. Riley entered the 2024 season on the hot seat, and there have been whispers he could be on a short leash if the Trojans falter out of the gate.

If USC does consider making a change at head coach, former ESPN and Fox Sports personality Skip Bayless believes he has the perfect replacement.

“Random thought: If stinkin' Lincoln Riley struggles this season, guess who's teaching a class just down the street from USC football offices? Pete Carroll,” Bayless tweeted. “Hmmm. Front burner.”

If the Trojans do make a head-coaching change, Carroll is the kind of high-profile hire that could help not only salvage the season but also make an impact on the recruiting trail.

Carroll had a successful nine-year run at USC from 2001 to 2009, compiling a 97-19 record with two national championships and five additional bowl wins.

The 72-year-old mutually parted ways with the Seattle Seahawks this offseason after 14 seasons, 10 playoff appearances, five division titles and one Super Bowl championship.
