Fernando Tatis Jr. made his long-awaited return to the San Diego Padres after a 73-day absence due to a stress reaction in his right thigh bone.

The star right fielder took the field at Petco Park, greeted by enthusiastic cheers from fans. Although he went 0-for-4 in the game against the Detroit Tigers, his presence was a significant boost for the team.

“I had goosebumps,” Tatis said .

Tatis' comeback comes at a crucial time for the Padres, who have been performing well in his absence.

They improved to 39-21 since his injury and have the best second-half record in Major League Baseball. His return adds depth to a lineup that has already been thriving, and the team is eager to build momentum as the regular season winds down.

In addition to Tatis, pitcher Yu Darvish is set to return to the mound after a lengthy injury layoff. This is a promising sign for the Padres as they look to solidify their playoff position.

“This is a great group,” Tatis said . “And we’re gonna push together hard.”

The Padres are currently 79-61 and are gaining confidence as they approach the postseason.

“He’s just an absolute presence,” manager Mike Shildt said. “The whole group brings their presence, and he’s a great addition, clearly.”

“We missed him,” said infielder Luis Arraez , who drove in two of San Diego’s three runs. “We missed his energy. (This was his) first game back, but we can’t wait to watch him play.”

The team has managed to stay competitive despite injuries, and Tatis’ return is expected to enhance their performance even further. With key players back in the lineup, the Padres are poised to make a strong push as they aim for October baseball.

“It’s a beautiful feeling, man,” Tatis said . “My energy went right through the roof. That was the push that I definitely needed, and it was just beautiful all the way around.”
