Police Identify Suspect in Murder of Gymnast Kara Welsh

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater community was stunned to learn that student Kara Welsh was murdered at an apartment a block from campus on August 30.

Welsh, 21, who was entering her senior year, and won the individual vault title at the national championship in 2023, was found dead after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds, per a statement by the Whitewater Police Department. "Also present in the apartment was a 23-year-old male who was known to the deceased female," the statement read.

The suspect was taken into custody and held at Walworth County Jail. The Whitewater Police revealed the suspect's identity as Chad T. Richards on September 3.

"The Whitewater Police Department is confirming the identity of the suspect arrested in this case as Chad T. Richards, 23, of Loves Park, Illinois. Richards is scheduled to appear in court today, September 3rd, at the Walworth County Courthouse," the statement read.

"The Whitewater Police Department forwarded the following charges to the Walworth County District Attorney’s Office: First-Degree Intentional Homicide.. Endangering Safety by the Use of a Dangerous Weapon... and Disorderly Conduct while Armed... It is noted that this case has not been concluded. Unless a judgement of conviction is entered, the arrestee/defendant is presumed innocent of all charges."

A GoFundMe campaign was created to support Welsh's parents, Nancy and Tom, along with her sister, Kaeli.

The GoFundMe, which has raised over $35,000, "We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of our beloved, Kara Welsh. Kara was a daughter, sister, dear friend and teammate who grew up in Plainfield, Illinois. Kara had a unique ability to bring joy to any person she crossed paths with, always putting a smile on people's faces with her sense of humor, unwavering support and sweet disposition.

"We are completely heartbroken for our beloved Welsh family - Nancy, Tom, and Kaeli as they navigate this incredibly difficult time."
