In an electrifying display of skill and resilience, sophomore UCLA football wide receiver Rico Flores Jr. made a spectacular debut, helping the Bruins secure a dramatic 24-21 victory over Hawaii on Saturday.

The transfer from Notre Dame, who only had three receptions in the game, turned those catches into 102 yards and a game-winning touchdown, marking his first significant impact as a Bruin.

Flores set the tone early with a 39-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Ethan Garbers. This play was the highlight of a 96-yard drive that put UCLA on the scoreboard for the first time, igniting the team's comeback effort.

The touchdown showcased Flores' ability to make big plays when needed, as he broke free downfield and caught a perfectly placed pass from Garbers.

The excitement didn't stop there. On the very next drive, Flores displayed his athleticism and agility by catching a pass from Garbers and sprinting 53 yards. Although the Bruins didn’t manage to score a touchdown on this drive, Flores' crucial reception put them in field goal range, contributing significantly to the close contest.

Flores' final contribution came on a 10-yard reception that earned a crucial first down on UCLA’s game-winning field goal drive. His 102-yard game marked only the second time in his college career that he reached the 100-yard receiving mark, underscoring his pivotal role in the Bruins' win.

Post-game, UCLA coach Foster praised Flores' performance , saying, "Rico came out and he played a great game, especially in the second half." Garbers, who has been building chemistry with Flores since his arrival in January, echoed the sentiment: “He’s been awesome. We’re going to keep working.”

Garbers also took time to commend his other receivers, emphasizing the collective effort in securing the win. "All the other receivers are doing a great job, too," he noted. "With the bye week this week, we’re going to get back in the lab and switch things up.”

In addition to Flores' standout performance, tight end Moliki Matavao and receiver J. Michael Sturdivant played crucial roles. Matavao caught three passes for 42 yards, while Sturdivant, despite a brief injury scare, added three catches for 36 yards. Their combined efforts were instrumental in moving the chains and securing the comeback victory for UCLA.

Rico Flores Jr.'s impressive debut performance was a key factor in UCLA's thrilling comeback win. His 102 yards and pivotal plays highlighted his value to the team and set a high bar for future games. The Bruins, with their dynamic offensive contributors, look poised for a strong season ahead.
