The Los Angeles Rams have made a surprising move that could give former Michigan running back Blake Corum a chance to shine against the Detroit Lions in their season opener.

The Rams recently appointed All-Pro running back Kyren Williams as their punt returner, a decision that is uncommon due to the risk of injury and increased workload for a starting running back.

However, Rams coach Sean McVay expressed confidence in Corum and Ronnie Rivers, the other running back on the roster, to step in if needed.

“You feel comfortable with that because of the confidence in Blake Corum and Ronnie Rivers being able to spell him if need be,” McVay said last week .

Corum, a third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, is set to make his mark in the state where he previously rushed for nearly 4,000 yards and secured three Big Ten titles.

His strong performance during training camp has caught the attention of the coaching staff.

“I think Blake Corum has come in and done an outstanding job,” McVay said .

As the Rams prepare to face the Lions, it remains to be seen how Williams' new role will affect his carries. The coaching staff is anticipating a natural adjustment as the game unfolds.

Asked how Williams’ workload could change with his new role, offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur said the team will find out on Sunday.

“I think that organically will play itself out,” LaFleur said . “Who knows how many.”

Fans will be watching closely to see how this unique situation plays out on the field.
