Two upsets occurred in the Week 1 slate, with the No. 10 Florida State Seminoles losing to the Boston College Eagles and the No. 23 USC Trojans knocking out the No. 13 LSU Tigers. Florida State became the third team ranked inside the preseason top 10 to fall out of the top 25.

After an exciting football weekend, Dan Mullen released his top 25 teams via social media. The Georgia Bulldogs remained the number one team on the AP Top 25, but Mullen took a different route with his top team.

Mullen ranked the Ohio State Buckeyes first and Georgia second. The Buckeyes faced the Akron Zips in their season opener and won 52-6.

It was the first team that fans saw starting quarterback Will Howard under center. Howard transferred from the Kansas State Wildcats this offseason.

It was also the debut of former Ole Miss Rebels running back Quinshon Judkins, who finished with 55 rushing yards and one touchdown. Chip Kelly debuted as the new offensive coordinator in Columbus.

Ohio State started slowly against Akron in the first half. Ohio State went into halftime up 17-3. The Buckeyes then scored 35 points in the second half to distance themselves from the Zips.

Ohio State is looking for its first national title since 2014 when the Buckeyes beat the Alabama Crimson Tide to win the College Football Playoff.

Ryan Day has made the playoff but never won a national championship with Ohio State. Day first reached the playoff in 2019 and lost to Clemson. He took Ohio State to the playoff again in 2020 but lost the championship game to Alabama. Then, there was the 2022 season, when Ohio State lost to Georgia after missing a game-winning field goal.

Ohio State is at home again in Week 2 against the Western Michigan Broncos. Kickoff is on Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m. ET via Big Ten Network.
