Bruins' Brad Marchand Reveals Brutal Offseason Surgeries

Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand is entering the final year of his eight-year, $49 million contract, and speaking at the first preseason practice of the year he revealed that he underwent three surgeries this offseason.

Those operations included one for a torn tendon in his elbow, as well as groin and hernia procedures, according to Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic . Now, with training camp set to open on September 18, Marchand’s availability remains in question.

“The goal is to try to be ready for camp,” Marchand told reporters. “If not, very shortly after. I’m just kind of getting back into the swing of things here now.”

Marchand said that he resumed his usual offseason training "approximately two weeks ago," which is far from ideal considering both the grueling recovery required after three significant surgeries and the fact that the Bruins captain is already 36 years old.

Marchand acknowledged the path back to full fitness will take time for him, although he said he feels good about his strength.

"This summer is not typical for what I’m used to," Marchand said. "It might take until the season. It might take a little bit into the season.

"But I’ll treat the next two months like the summer—train and skate the way I normally would during the summer."

Marchand, who played through these injuries during the 2023-24 season, still managed to score 29 goals and add 38 assists for the Bruins. As far as his current status goes, Shinzawa reported that Marchand is focused on "solo sessions and gym work."
