Jets Urged To Sign Former Packers Tight End

With Year 2 of the Aaron Rodgers era with the New York Jets about to begin, the team is still lacking in productive pass catchers. Rodgers’ season hinges on the play of Garrett Wilson, who is an absolute star, and Allen Lazard who is coming off the worst season of his career.

Bleacher Report recently published an article urging the Jets to sign former Green Bay Packers tight end Robert Tonyan.

Tight End Rankings Week 14: Robert Tonyan

"The Jets will continue to find ways to ensure that the Aaron Rodgers experience is a success,” B/R writes. “One of the concerns going into the season is that the Jets have struggled to find pass-catchers with experience to support Rodgers and Garrett Wilson.

“Robert Tonyan isn't a premier name, but he did play 68 games and catch 17 touchdowns during Rodgers' time with the Packers. He might be worth bringing in to supplement a tight end room that only kept two players."

Tonyan was a big target for Rodgers in 2020 when he won the first of two consecutive league MVPs. That also happened to be Tonyan’s best season as a pro as he caught 52 of 59 targets totaling 586 yards and a whopping 11 touchdowns.

That was four seasons ago, but Tonyan knows this offense, has a connection with Rodgers where they built up a mutual trust, and he could be a big-time red zone target for the Jets.

It’s an interesting option for sure. Since he is currently signed to the Minnesota Vikings practice squad, the Jets could likely get him on a veteran minimum deal and see if he has anything left in the tank.

The Jets kick their season off on the road on Monday Night Football as they travel to Santa Clara, CA to take on the San Francisco 49ers.

Kickoff is scheduled for 8:20 p.m. ET.
