The Michigan Wolverines didn’t look like the same fine-tuned machine they operated as under former head coach Jim Harbaugh in their season opener against the Fresno State Bulldogs. They played both starting options at quarterback in Davis Warren and Alex Orji combing for 16-of-27 on passing attempts and only 121 yards.

The backfield tandem of former five-star running back Donovan Edwards and Kalel Mullings went over 100 yards, but the former of the two struggled for only 27 yards on 11 carries. Wolverines running back coach Tony Alford told members of the media he ‘failed’ to get more of the running back unit in the mix throughout the game.

“Michigan RB coach Tony Alford says he ‘failed as a coach’ by not getting Ben Hall in the game Saturday. ‘He’s earned those carries’. Also says freshman Jordan Marshall is ‘going to be a great player here, I know it’ and will get opportunities to show it this fall,” 247 Sports Michigan beat reporter Zach Shaw reported on Wednesday.

Marshall is one of the Wolverines’ most-prized commits of the 2024 recruiting class and Hall stepped in several times during his freshman season but found himself buried in the depth chart behind Mullings, Edwards, and Blake Corum in 2023.

These backs will need to be ready to make an impact as the No. 10 Wolverines host the No. 3 Texas Longhorns in what many are calling the ‘game of the week’. Kickoff is set for Saturday, September 7 at noon ET on Fox.
