LSU is still striving to return to its national championship-contending ways. They last made the College Football Playoff in 2019, when the Tigers emerged as national champions.

When Brian Kelly was hired in 2022, many thought he would be the person to lead the team back there. Kelly has an impressive FBS head coaching record of 186-70 in 21 seasons, which includes 11 seasons with 10 or more wins. He also has seven consecutive 10 or more-win seasons at LSU and Notre Dame.

However, he has not yet been able to make the playoffs at LSU, and this season started off rough, with an opening season loss to the USC Trojans. ESPN's Paul Finebaum doesn't think Kelly's job is on the line yet, but if he doesn't turn LSU into a contender this year or next, Finebaum believes he could be let go.

"Brian Kelly is not fighting for his job; he's fighting to get LSU back to a prominent role," Finebaum said. "Now, you and I know this: if he doesn't do it this year or next, there will be a change."

Kelly has been successful at LSU. He has led the Tigers to back-to-back 10-win seasons, and in his first year, he had the Tigers playing for an SEC championship. The first 10-win season under Kelly in 2022 was the first for LSU since the 2019 season and ended a streak of back-to-back non-winning seasons.

So, currently, Finebaum believes Kelly's position is secure, but if things remain unchanged, he may face increased pressure by the end of next season.
