Bucs Receiver McMillan Late-Round Fantasy Sleeper?

    By Anthony Goss,

Jalen McMillan has quickly risen up the ranks on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver depth chart. Through training camp and the preseason, the rookie has quickly gained the respect of the team's leadership, elevating him to the offense's No. 3 receiver.

That promotion can serve different purposes in various systems around the NFL. In Tampa Bay, however, two premier receivers hold down the top spots in Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.

From a fantasy perspective, those two are lineup staples for traditional leagues and should both have strong campaigns once again. Will that inhibit his potential target share and potential fantasy value this season?

ESPN's Matt Bowen expects the opposite . Instead, he believes McMillan's versatility will work in his favor to solidify a workload in the Bucs offense and enhance his fantasy value.

"He is expected to start the season as the No. 3 wide receiver in Tampa [Bay], where he can see volume from both slot and perimeter alignments," he wrote.

"McMillan has the playmaking traits to get vertical, create in space, or turn an underneath throw into a big gain. And that fits with the aggressive throwing mentality of quarterback Baker Mayfield."

Evans and Godwin tout some of those same abilities. Adding a third receiver with a similar skill set could make this offense a load to deal with.

But defenses will have to key in on the known when preparing for Tampa Bay, meaning a concerted effort to neutralize one of Evans or Godwin. That presents another avenue of opportunity for McMillan.

In his work training camp and through one preseason drive, it seems the chemistry with Mayfield is already present. If that connection carries over to the regular season, the Washington product could be a late-round steal or valuable free-agency pickup.
