Rumor: Cowboys 'Close' On Dak Deal?

    By Mike Fisher,

FRISCO - Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman recently said that Dak Prescott "doesn't care about anything but winning.''

If that was literally true, Prescott's ongoing extension talks with the team would not be dragging on like this as we approach NFL Week 1 - the Cowboys' announced "soft deadline'' - without finalization on a new deal.

But maybe, as rumors abound, we're inching closer to the sort of marriage that both sides can live with.

Aikman said (via Pat McAfee), "If it continues to drag on and he plays great and then the Cowboys come in late and say 'Now we wanna pay you,' I don't know where his head will be at that point. ..."

Where might it be? The chance to become the highest-paid player in NFL history ... via free agency next March.

There are, however as of Thursday, whispers that the two sides are getting "close,'' that the financial saga can end and thereby get out of the way of actual football.

Aikman said Dak is "frustrated'' by the team's lack of playoff success, and on that issue the QB and the Joneses can absolutely agree. Can they agree on a deal? Soon?

This much seems true: The Cowboys' best chance of competing for a title is with Dak Prescott at QB. If Dallas believes that to be the case, the Joneses need to bend.

But if Prescott "doesn't care about anything but winning''? Doesn't "play for the money,'' as he's insisted? He needs to bend, too. And soon.
