The country saw what the Tennessee Volunteers offense devolved into without an elite quarterback taking snaps in 2023. Josh Heupel’s offense still made Joe Milton look somewhat decent but he was never going to replicate what they achieved with Hendon Hooker in 2022. Fans have reason to be excited for the rest of the 2024 season after not only seeing starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava make Citrus Bowl history at the end of last year, but also after seeing him start his redshirt freshman year strong with a massive 69-3 win against Chattanooga.

College football analyst David Pollack noticed the performance, with the Volunteers now outscoring opponents 104-3 in the two games Iamaleava started. He says this offense is more than capable of being one of the best in college football.

“Tennessee and Nico–all the buzz,” Pollack said on his Week 2 preview. “Everyone talking about them. This offense is looking like it’s ready to take off. It’s ready to go next level. It’s ready to go nuclear.”

Pollack says it’s not just Iamaleava that opposing defenses will need to worry about. Junior running back Dylan Sampson ran for over 100 yards in both games Iamaleava started and Pollack says that proves this offense is as well-rounded as any other in the country.

“If Tennessee gets balance, with that offense, with Nico’s ability to run the football…Nico’s special,” he said.

The country will get to see Nico and company in primetime when the No. 14 Volunteers host the No. 24 NC State Wolfpack. Kickoff is set for Saturday, September 7 at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
