Special teams play is always important especially as the Sooners are prepping for a tough SEC season. While Oklahoma is expected to dominate Houston on Saturday, it’s still important that all three phases of the game perform well regardless of the score.

Punter Luke Elzinga spoke to the media this week about his approach to game day.

Do you feel like your job’s in jeopardy after Jackson’s punt on Friday?

Luke: Yeah. No, I’m just kidding. He’s done it before in practice and I was kind of surprised when it happened. I was a little jealous wishing it was me but it helped the team out in every single way so I was happy for him.

So far, how much easier has it been for you in year two in terms of getting on the same page with Ben as your long snapper versus last year when you guys were kind of new to it?

Luke: I feel a lot more comfortable this year. We’re a really tight-knit group of guys so we hang out all the time. We’ve got a nice little rhythm going right now so it’s been good…It’s been great so far and it’s only going to get better.

What do you think enabled Tyler [Keltner] to have the kind of night he had on Friday?

Luke: His work ethic is next to none. Anything that goes into kicking, whether it’s stretching, technique or footwork, he takes it to the next level. I wave really surprised when he had his day yesterday. We kind of knew it was going to happen when he went out there. He just has a lot of confidence in himself and we really didn’t expect anything less.
