Chiefs' JuJu Smith-Schuster Facing Backlash Over Controversial Decision

The Kansas City Chiefs opened the NFL season against the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday in a game that the back-to-back Super Bowl champions won by a toe.

Had Ravens tight end Isaiah Likely been a shoe size smaller, the Ravens could have had a chance to win late in the fourth. Instead, he was ruled out on what was originally thought to be the game-tying touchdown with just seconds remaining.

The Chiefs went on to win 27-20, and the NFL world was treated to a broadcast full of excitement surrounding Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Taylor Swift.

While the game itself was great, and the Chiefs have every right to be thrilled to start with a win, fans are upset with recently acquired receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster.

The once-promising star, who also dazzled on TikTok, has since been criticized for his decline on the field and his frequent posting on the app known for dancing. We saw a prime example of this on Friday, as Smith-Schuster posted a video commemorating what seemed to be the start of football.

"We back outside ski," wrote Smith-Schuster in the caption.

The post came after he dropped his lone target in the win on a play that appeared to have had a chance to be a touchdown if he held onto it. Something that fans are certainly making sure to remind him of on the app formerly known as Twitter.

"All his focus needs to be on catching the football," wrote one fan.

"Even his TikTok’s are washed up lmaoo," added another.

"all that dancing and bro cant catch," wrote another.

    "Cut him," replied another fan.

Smith-Schuster may be a bit rusty, considering the Chiefs just signed him on August 26, but clearly, fans think he isn't taking the season seriously.

Smith-Schuster was released by the New England Patriots earlier in August, just one year into his three-year, $25 million deal. The Patriots were clearly hoping for the version of him that racked up 76 catches for 933 yards and three touchdowns in 2022 with the Chiefs, and he missed those marks by quite a wide margin.

In his lone year in New England, Smith-Schuster had just 29 catches for 260 yards and a score in 11 games.

The Chiefs don't necessarily need him to be the Smith-Schuster of old who took the league by storm after being taken in the second round of the 2017 NFL draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, surely they'd love for the 27-year-old to have more catches in a game than TikToks filmed.

He and Kansas City will return to action on Sunday, September 15, against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Give the guy a break. He will contribute as the season progresses, but he’s going to be the 5th, 6th, or even 7th option on most plays at this point. If he chips in couple catches a game I’d consider that pretty decent at that spot.
