It isn’t often that college football delivers a week full of chaos this early, but Week 2 of the 2024 season featured must-see games from noon until well past midnight.
No. 3 Texas’ win at No. 10 Michigan is the headliner, especially among games expected to have serious College Football Playoff repercussions. Quinn Ewers looked completely poised in front of a packed Big House, leading the Longhorns to a 31-12 win that felt even more decisive than the score.
No. 14 Tennessee made a big statement in Charlotte, smothering No. 24 NC State, 51-10. The Vols outgained the Wolfpack 460 yards to 143.
While the Longhorns and Volunteers thrived on Saturday, a number of their fellow top-25 teams struggled. No. 4 Alabama was in a dogfight with USF, reminiscent of last year’s game, until the fourth quarter, when the Tide scored 28 points to pull away.
No. 8 Penn State struggled past Bowling Green. No. 15 Oklahoma scored just two second-half points — a late fourth-quarter safety — in a tight win against rebuilding Houston. No. 16 Oklahoma State went to double overtime against Arkansas , and No. 17 Kansas State was taken to the wire by Tulane . No. 7 Oregon beat unranked Boise State on a last-second field goal after a back-and-forth shootout.
Those teams were lucky compared to the four top-25 teams that lost on Saturday to unranked opponents: No. 5 Notre Dame , No. 19 Kansas , No. 21 Iowa and No. 23 Georgia Tech .
Ahead of Sunday’s release of the updated AP Top 25 poll, here is our projection of the Week 3 rankings:
