Calls Intensify for Dismissal of Polarizing College Football Coach

    By Michael Gallagher,

    2024-09-08

University of Colorado football coach Deion Sanders talks a big game, but so far through his first 14 games as the Buffaloes head coach — a run that included a six-game losing streak to close out the 2023 season — he hasn’t backed it up.

Which is why after CU’s 28-10 loss to Nebraska Saturday night at Memorial Stadium, Sanders, an eight time Pro Bowl cornerback in the NFL and two-time SWAC Coach of the Year at Jackson State, had plenty of explaining to do.

“We got to be able to handle pressure,” Sanders told reporters after Saturday’s loss. “Not just the pressure of — I’m not saying them rushing the passer — the pressure of the game, the pressure of the moment, the pressure of the time. Everybody want to be him until it’s time to be him. We’ve got to be able to handle that pressure.”

There’s still plenty of time for Sanders and the Buffaloes to turn things around, but there’s no question his seat is starting to warm up. In fact, there are some people calling for his job already.

“It's pretty clear that Coach Prime is on his way to getting fired and may be the worst coach in major college football. He's making Nebraska look like a powerhouse and not the rebuilding team that it is, with a true freshman QB. Very sad,” wrote one disgruntled fan .

“The Deion Sanders experiment is over. This Colorado team is so undisciplined. This is what happens when you refuse to recruit, rely strictly on the transfer portal, & let the coaches sons have way too much of a platform,” another added .

“Deion Sanders does not belong at a power 5,” exclaimed one user .

“He’s a f---ing terrible coach. Him and his Louis bags should be fired. Bro is a fraud of a coach,” another user commented .

“So..... how long till Deion Sanders gets fired?” asked another user .

While the Buffaloes may be struggling and the fan base growing more tired of Sanders’ antics, it may not be as simple as just firing him if the team keeps struggling.

The 57-year-old coach signed a five-year, $29.5 million contract with CU in 2023 and the school would owe him a lot of money if he doesn’t complete that contract. If Sanders is fired without cause, Colorado would owe him 75% of his remaining deal.

No one is a bigger Deion fan than me. I am a Tallahassee native & remember when he played for my FSU Seminoles & was so glad & excited to see him coaching at Colorado that my husband & I bought shirts last season. However it seems a toss up who has worse problems coaching he or Mike Norvell. I hope both can turn things around or they may be looking for a new job together!!!!

Coach Sanders, (his name, not Brand) lol should return to FSU. If he’s going to succeed in Division I that’s his best bet. My opinion he will get more friendly press and fan base. Personally not a fan of either school, and not overly impressed by his coaching acumen. Time will tell. RTR!!!
