Matthew Stafford is on the verge of making history as he prepares to face the Detroit Lions in the season opener. The Los Angeles Rams quarterback is just 345 yards away from surpassing Peyton Manning on the all-time passing yards list for opening games.

This matchup marks Stafford's 16th career opening game, a streak that has remained intact since he was drafted in 2009. Currently, he sits behind only Drew Brees and Tom Brady in terms of passing yards in season openers.

To move up the ranks, Stafford needs to pass Matt Ryan, who holds the fourth spot with 4,486 yards. Stafford only requires 94 yards to achieve this, and with his track record, he could also overtake Manning, who accumulated 4,736 yards in his opening games.

Stafford has averaged 293 yards in his opening games, including eight performances over 300 yards. He has thrown for more than 345 yards four times, with his most recent effort being 334 yards last season.

However, Stafford will face challenges this week, as he will be without left tackle Alaric Jackson, who is suspended for the first two games. Right tackle Rob Havenstein is also listed as questionable due to an ankle injury.

As the Rams gear up for this important game, all eyes will be on Stafford as he aims to secure his place in the record books.
