Packers Make Final Call on New Starting QB With Jordan Love Sidelined by Injury

The Green Bay Packers may be active in the trade market or free agency this week to add depth to the quarterback room after Jordan Love sprained his MCL against the Philadelphia Eagles Friday night. However, the team has already made the call on who will start under center against the Indianapolis Colts at Lambeau Field in Week 2.

Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reported on Sunday, September 8, that the Packers will give the nod to backup QB Malik Willis , for whom they traded just 13 days ago in a deal with the Tennessee Titans . Glazer also offered an update on Love's return timeline.

"Very scary, but not as bad as it could have been," Glazer said of Love's injury . "Look, it wasn't the ACL. Instead, it's a grade 1 or 2 sprained MCL. It's about a 2-4 week injury. Matt LaFleur said, 'We do wanna be conservative with him.' But much better news than it could have been. In the meantime, Malik Willis will get the start."

Willis saw two downs of action for the Packers in Week 1 -- the final two of the game. He threw an incomplete pass on play one and was then sacked by the Eagles defense following his second snap, which marked the end of the contest.

Willis has 12 career appearances and three starts to his name, during which he has completed 52.2% of his pass attempts for 350 yards and 3 INTs. He has 32 carries in the run game for a total of 144 yards and 1 score.

Practice squad QB Sean Clifford , who the Packers selected in the 2023 NFL draft, has played in two career contests but has never attempted a pass as a professional. He will presumably serve as Willis' backup against the Colts next Sunday.
