Steelers Found Their Starting QB After Win Over Falcons: And It's Not Justin Fields

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin named Russell Wilson as the starting quarterback coming out of the preseason despite Wilson missing considerable time in training camp and in the preseason due to a calf injury.

After the Steelers' 18-10 win over the Falcons in Atlanta on Sunday, it appears that was the right decision.

After witnessing a Steelers' win that failed to produce an offensive touchdown, it's evident that backup quarterback Justin Fields still has a long way to go before being considered an NFL starter.

Is a healthy Justin Fields more effective than a hobbled Russell Wilson? Probably. Is a healthy Justin Fields better than a healthy Russell Wilson? Almost certainly not.

The issue here is Wilson's health. A calf injury is no joke and could cause Wilson to miss multiple weeks. Until then, Fields is the backup.

But once Wilson gets healthy again, it's his job to take.

After a couple of seasons of lackluster quarterback play, the Steelers are ready for an explosive offense again. That was the whole point of replacing former offensive coordinator Matt Canada with Arthur Smith, and outing the former quarterback room of Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph and Mitchell Trubisky, and replacing them with Wilson and Fields.

Fields showed the ability to move the offense in the preseason but didn't completely impress.

Wilson's track record is better, and won the starting job kind of by default ... again, after Fields couldn't win it even with all the playing time in the preseason.

Once Wilson is healthy again, the job is his. Tomlin made the right choice.

Wilson's calf will cintinue to give him problems. Recovery is lengthy for older players. We seem to like Bears rejects. They still can't run block worth a crap.

It didn't have to be like this. Steelers have always won with a strong defense and slow moving offense with aggressive running and a good QB which they still had once they adjusted the offense to fit the talent. but like they said you cleaned house and have a big question mark for the season. rff
