To determine their success in the 2024-25 season, the Memphis Grizzlies will bank a lot of things toward Zach Edey.

It might be harsh considering that Edey will just have his first taste of NBA basketball, but the Grizzlies will certainly rely on the former Purdue star to put all of what he has on the table for their success. As Memphis is envisioning a comeback rally after a season of struggles and frustrations, the team expects nothing but solid signs coming at the side of their prized lottery pick, from helping to anchor their team defense and becoming an interior nightmare matchup with his imposing 7-foot-4 frame.

    Memphis’ X-factor

By acknowledging all of the hype surrounding Edey, it is already worth noting that everyone anticipates a commendable run from him once he finally seizes his rookie duties for the Grizzlies. For this, Damichael Cole pegged the 22-year-old big man as the undisputed X-factor of the team once they head into the 2024-25 season.

“If the Grizzlies are to be a Top 2 or 3 on the West like they were the two previous years before the injuries [in the 2023-24] season, Zach Edey will be a Rookie of the Year candidate. He'll probably average 11 points, 8 rebounds, and going to be an impactful defender in protecting the rim and allow Jaren Jackson Jr. to roam a little bit more and play the power forward,” Cole said .

“A rookie will be in foul trouble a lot and got to find his way. They say big man develops slower in the NBA. If he's having a slow developing season, then the Grizzlies record will show that.”

Could Edey live up to the expectations?

From the individual success he delivered for himself in his final years in Purdue and the brief, productive Summer League outing he showcased for Memphis, Edey truly produced a promising impression not only for the Grizzlies fanbase but also for most of the league. He is currently stepping into an intriguing spot to kickstart his career and savor winning as early as he can in Bluff City.

As Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr., and Desmond Bane are already expected to pull off their respective damage and contributions as the three main stars of the team, what Zach will show from himself can only add a major difference for the Grizzlies. There might be plenty of bumps and learning curves along the way for the Canadian rookie, but how he'll embrace the challenge to instantly contribute to Memphis couldn't be more compelling to watch for the entire organization.
