In their season opener against the Detroit Lions, the Los Angeles Rams were dealt a blow, losing several key players to injury. Most notably, starting offensive lineman Steve Avila exited mid-game after suffering what is suspected to be an MCL strain. Further testing is scheduled for later today to determine the severity of the injury, but initial reports are far from reassuring.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport broke the news of Avila’s injury on social media, and while the Rams remain hopeful, the likelihood of him missing Week 2 against the Arizona Cardinals seems increasingly high. The priority now is ensuring that Avila’s injury doesn’t worsen, which may mean a cautious approach to his return.

Unfortunately for Los Angeles, the offensive line is already stretched thin. Fellow lineman Joe Noteboom also left the game early due to an ankle injury, raising concerns about the team’s depth in protecting quarterback Matthew Stafford. Should both players be sidelined, the Rams will need to rethink their game plan quickly, possibly exploring outside options to bolster the line.

Adding to the Rams’ injury woes, star wide receiver Puka Nacua also sustained a knee injury during the game. Nacua, who was already dealing with knee issues in the preseason, was ruled out for the second half. Given his preseason troubles, the Rams are expected to handle his recovery with extra caution. Losing Nacua for any extended period would be a massive setback for a team looking to rebound after last season's struggles.

Head coach Sean McVay has typically kept starters on the sidelines during preseason, but the lack of live reps could be contributing to these early injuries. Despite the team's valiant effort, keeping pace with one of the NFC’s top teams, the injuries took some of the shine off the Rams' competitive performance.

As the Rams prepare to face the Arizona Cardinals next week, all eyes will be on the injury report. Los Angeles will have to regroup fast, especially with the San Francisco 49ers looming on the horizon for their home opener in Week 3.
