Giants Drama? Nabers Comments Being Taken Out of Context

The New York Giants disappointed just about everybody on Sunday, from the home fans to the legends they celebrated at halftime.

In losing 28-6 in the Week 1 loss to the Minnesota Vikings , a bright spotlight turned to a shadow and excitement turned to blame. So when receiver Malik Nabers was asked about his quarterback, Daniel Jones , his words were kindling to a social media wildfire.

But don’t let bad-faith aggregators fool you – Nabers didn’t light a match on Sunday.

"I mean, no, I don't know really what's going on back there," Nabers said , when asked about his quarterback’s process. "I'm getting out on my routes and just trying to make a play, trying to find him, trying to make a better throw for him to make. I was just doing my job, that's all I can do."

It’s easy to take that and run with Nabers being a prototypical receiver diva. It would surprise nobody if Nabers, frustrated by poor quarterback play, complained about the offense’s struggles. Receivers across the sport partake every season.

But Nabers didn’t. He was speaking from a place of uncertainty, not anger. Nabers doesn’t know if Jones targeted him enough because he wasn’t looking at his quarterback. He was trying to get open!

Fortunately for the rookie receiver, he did perform well. Nabers led the team in receiving (five catches for 66 yards) and posted an above-average mark of 3.85 yards of separation per target ( Next Gen Stats ).

The first-round pick isn’t quitting on anyone after a single loss, no matter how embarrassing it was.

"First game of the season, a lot of new stuff going on, new O-line,” he said. “We just got to go over the film, practice way harder than we did, and just come out better next week. It's all really we can do."

Nabers and the rest of the offense will have a chance to rebound against an atrocious Washington Commanders defense next Sunday. He’ll look to outpace his college quarterback, Jayden Daniels, and find the end zone for the first time as a professional.

“You're going to lose games, it's how really you bounce back," Nabers said. "First game of the season doesn't determine your season. We just have to keep on going as a team."
