Gophers football game vs. Iowa set for primetime

The Minnesota Gophers football team will battle for Floyd of Rosedale in primetime later this month.

Kickoff in Minnesota’s Sept. 21 game against the rival Iowa Hawkeyes was officially set for 6:30 p.m. on Monday. Additionally, the game will be broadcast nationally on NBC. That will make it Minnesota's second primetime and national TV game of the season, following their Week 1 loss to North Carolina.

The Gophers will be fighting to keep Floyd, the iconic trophy in the rivalry, after knocking off the Hawkeyes when they were ranked 24th in the country last fall.

The two programs have met more than 100 times, with the Gophers holding the all-time edge in the series, 63-52-2. However, the Hawkeyes have a 44-43-2 edge since the trophy was introduced in 1935, including winning eight straight until Minnesota’s win last season.

The Maroon and Gold will look to even that record and make it two straight for them in a couple of weeks, and the program has also called for a “Maroon Out” for fans at Huntington Bank Stadium.

Both programs are 1-1 this season heading into Week 3, as the Gophers just routed Rhode Island 48-0 while Iowa lost to Iowa State 20-19.

This week, the Gophers host Nevada and the Hawkeyes host Troy before the teams get ready for their rivalry game.
