The Detroit Tigers are making a surprising push for a playoff spot as the season winds down. After a strong 9-1 victory against the Oakland Athletics, the Tigers improved their record to 73-71, now sitting just 3.5 games behind the Minnesota Twins for the final American League wild card position.

At the trade deadline, the Tigers opted to rebuild, trading away veteran players like Mark Canha and Jack Flaherty to give younger talent a chance to shine. This strategy appears to be paying off, as the team has gone 11-5 in their last 16 games.

Parker Meadows has been a standout performer, hitting a grand slam in a recent game against the San Diego Padres and accumulating nine RBIs over the past week. Trey Sweeney also had a notable performance, going four for four with a home run and two RBIs in the win against Oakland.

Riley Greene has provided stability, contributing consistently with seven hits in his last 23 at-bats, including two doubles and four RBIs. Other young players like Jace Jung, Justyn-Henry Malloy, and Dillon Dingler are also getting valuable playing time, helping the team gain momentum.

The Tigers face a tough schedule ahead, starting with a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies. Following that, they will take on several playoff contenders, including the Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals. If they want to secure a postseason berth for the first time since 2014, they will need to continue their strong play against these challenging opponents.

The writer stated the Tigers were facing "several" playoff contenters, then mentioned the O's and the Royals - those are really the only two, though they do play the O's twice. The Tigers remaing schedule: Rockies, O's, Royals, O's, Ray's and they close out with the White Sox. Those nine games against the O's and Royals will tell the tale...Go Tigers!

l don't think they'll end up making the playoffs but being in contention for a spot is still much better than previous seasons.
