Pat McAfee Refers to One Franchise as an ‘Expansion Team’

In Week 1 of the NFL season, one team continued to look as lackluster as it did in 2023, and Pat McAfee called them out for it.

McAfee does a segment on "The Pat McAfee Show" called "#IDontWantToOverreactBut. He and his co-hosts discuss a trending sports topic and debate whether it's an overreaction or not.

One fan posted a statement with the hashtag on X, and McAfee shared it with his viewers.

McAfee began reading the first sentence, stopped after seeing the Carolina Panthers written, and said, "Wow. That's an expansion team. That ain't generational."

    The post read like this:

"Panthers fan here, logo tattooed on me," a fan wrote on X. "At least my fantasy teams are doing well... for now. #IDontWantToOverreactBut being a Panthers fan makes me envy my grandfather... since he's dead and doesn't have to witness this travesty taking place in Charlotte."

The Carolina Panthers' 2-15 record last season was the worst in the NFL. To make matters worse, the team made a blockbuster trade in 2022 that, so far, isn't turning out in the organization's favor.

    Carolina Panthers received:

    • 2023 No. 1 pick (Bryce Young)

    Chicago Bears received:

    • Wide receiver DJ Moore
    • 2023 No. 9 pick
    • 2023 No. 61 pick (second round)
    • 2024 first-round pick (turned out to be No. 1 - Caleb Williams)
    • 2025 second-round pick (TBD)

Note: The Bears made additional trades with their extended draft capital.

Some Carolina fans already believe Young is not the answer . In the team's 47-10 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, September 8, Young completed just 13-of-30 passes for 161 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions.

Young's rookie season wasn't much better, completing only 59.8% of his passes for 2,877 yards, 11 touchdowns, 10 interceptions and 62 sacks taken across 16 starts.

To unlock the upside Young showed at Alabama, Carolina still needs to surround the quarterback with more talent. After the trade they made with the Bears to acquire their franchise signal-caller, that won't be easy to do in the next few years.
