NFL Team Cuts Kicker After Missing 2 Field Goals in Week 1

Cade York is looking for a job after being let go by the Washington Commanders following his rough Week 1 performance.

The Commanders traded for York ahead of the season, sending a conditional seventh-round pick to the Cleveland Browns. They hoped the former LSU kicker could be their solution, but he failed in his first opportunity in Washington.

York missed a pair of field goals in the opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The kicks were from 47 and 56 yards out. He did make both of his extra points, but the Commanders lost 37-20.

York may have a hard time finding another gig. He's just 24-of-34 (70.6%) for his career on field goal attempts.

The Commanders replaced York with another former Browns kicker, signing Austin Seibert. Cleveland selected Seibert in the fifth round of 2019. He's bounced around between five different teams since then.

The Browns selected York in the fourth round of the 2022 draft. York was the highest-drafted kicker since 2016, when the Buccaneers took Roberto Aguayo in the second round. Cleveland replaced York with Dustin Hopkins last season but brought York back during the offseason in hopes of eventually reaching a trade with a kicker-needy team.

The Commanders came calling, but unfortunately for the Browns, they wonʻt be getting the seventh-round pick.

"The conditions of the trade between the Commanders and Browns stated Cade York had to on the roster for two games for the conditional seventh-round pick to change hands," Mike Garafolo of NFL Network said. "So that deal is off now that York has been released."

The conditional pick likely contributed to the Commanders' quick release of York. But it's a make-or-miss league, and York has not found his footing at the NFL level.
