The Los Angeles Chargers have made a strategic move to strengthen their secondary by signing cornerback Nehemiah Shelton to their practice squad. This decision comes alongside the release of cornerback Matt Hankins.

Shelton, who went undrafted in 2023, initially joined the New York Jets. After a brief stint on their practice squad, he was released in October. He later played in the USFL with the Memphis Showboats before returning to the Jets this August, where he did not make the final roster cuts.

During his college career at San Jose State, Shelton played in 45 games, recording 195 tackles, 32 passes defended, and eight interceptions. He earned all-conference honors in both 2021 and 2022.

On the other hand, Hankins had a notable preseason, highlighted by an interception against the Dallas Cowboys. He previously won a USFL Championship with the Birmingham Stallions before signing with the Chargers. At the University of Iowa, he had a strong collegiate career, finishing with 44 tackles, three interceptions, and five pass breakups in his final season.

This proactive approach marks a shift from previous management, emphasizing a commitment to improving the team's performance.
