Brandon Aiyuk Called Out by Peyton Manning on Live TV

The San Francisco 49ers and star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk played tag during camp while working out a new contract extension. A deal was finally done on Aug. 29, making Ayiuk one of the top paid players at the position at $120 million over four years.

It seemed like the delayed agreement was water under the bridge headed into the season opener versus Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets on Monday Night Football. But after Aiyuk dropped a touchdown pass from 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning quickly brought up the missed reps in training camp as the potential reason for the uncharacteristic drop by the All-Pro wideout.

"There’s a reason for training camp," Manning said on "Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli." "You need it. We need the reps. Get those contracts done earlier so we can get in training camp and we don’t drop balls on opening night."

"You’re still catching balls at a high school field from some quarterback that’s 45-years old, my age," Manning continued. "You’re not catching balls from your quarterback. Get signed, get in camp and we don’t drop the ball."

Aiyuk has been targeted five times with two catches for 28 yards. Three other San Francisco receivers have more catches than Aiyuk with four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and the 49ers commanding a 32-13 lead.

The 49ers will likely finish with a home win and head to Minnesota to take on the Vikings (1-0) on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET (CBS).
