Calais Campbell keeps it classy with Jaguars fans while handcuffed

There was a brief moment of levity in an otherwise disturbing video. Miami police released almost two hours of bodycam footage from the traffic stop and detainment of Tyreek Hill.

It’s understandable that there may be arguments about whether Tyreek’s actions set some events in motion. However, it’s almost universally agreed that at least one of the officers' behavior constituted an abuse of authority.

This was abundantly clear when Calais Campbell, attempting to act as a peacemaker, ended up being handcuffed and scolded by a very surly police officer.

Yet through it all, Calais was the epitome of class. When some Jaguars fans, in a very Duvalesque way, walked by the scene and told Campbell they were big fans of his, Calais acknowledged them and thanked them for their support.

That’s Calais Campbell.

Even in highly stressful situations, such as being unjustly handcuffed and forced onto his knees on the sidewalk, he consistently chooses grace and kindness. This admirable display of character is not surprising, as he has proven time and time again to be a great person.

There's a reason Calais was the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year winner and, most recently, Alan Page Community Award winner. And most importantly to Jaguars fans, he was our Mayor, the Mayor of Sacksonville.

Campbell arrived to help and de-escalate a very tense situation. I wish the officer had responded in the same manner. Despite everything, when the cuffs finally came off, it was Calais offering his hand in peace.

Tyreek Hill mentioned during his press conference that he hopes to see something positive emerge from this negative situation.

Let's hope so.
