The Tampa Bay Buccaneers opened the season with a commanding 37-20 victory over the Washington Commanders, solidifying their position as a team to watch in the NFC South. Climbing to No. 12 in Bleacher Report’s latest NFL Power Rankings, the Bucs showcased a potent offense under new coordinator Liam Coen and the steady leadership of quarterback Baker Mayfield.

This win places them in a tie with the New Orleans Saints for the division lead, as both teams secured impressive Week 1 victories.

Baker Mayfield delivered one of the best performances of the week, completing 24 of 30 passes for 289 yards and four touchdowns. After a slow start that saw three drives end in field goals, Mayfield found his rhythm, connecting with Mike Evans for a touchdown in the second quarter. The offense exploded in the second half with touchdown passes to Chris Godwin, Jalen McMillan, and a second score from Evans that put the game out of reach. Tampa Bay's balanced attack featured strong contributions from Rachaad White and rookie Bucky Irving, who combined for over 75 rushing yards.

While the Bucs offense shined, the defense dealt with challenges . The absence of Logan Hall and Calijah Kancey on the defensive front, coupled with Bryce Hall's leg injury, tested the unit's depth. Despite these setbacks, the defense managed to contain Washington's rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, who found limited success outside of his rushing efforts, finishing with 88 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

The New Orleans Saints, tied with the Bucs at the top of the division, also made a statement with a 47-10 blowout win over the Carolina Panthers. The Saints’ offense, led by Derek Carr, fired on all cylinders, while their defense held the Panthers to under 200 yards and forced three turnovers.

Meanwhile, the Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers round out the division standings after disappointing losses. Atlanta, ranked 22nd, struggled offensively in an 18-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, with Kirk Cousins finding little success in his debut. Carolina, ranked last at No. 32, was overmatched in a 47-10 defeat to the Saints, raising early concerns about the performance of quarterback Bryce Young and the team's defense.

Looking ahead, the Buccaneers aim to continue their momentum in Week 2 as they prepare to face the Detroit Lions. With a strong showing in their season opener, Tampa Bay has positioned itself as a legitimate contender in the NFC South.
