Lakers News: Jerry West to be Remembered with Commemorative Band on Lakers Jerseys

The Los Angeles Lakers are set to honor Jerry West during the 2024-25 NBA season with a special commemorative No. 44 band on their jerseys.

This tribute comes in recognition of West's significant contributions to the franchise as both a player and an executive. West passed away in June at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy that resonates throughout the league.

West's silhouette is famously featured in the NBA logo, underscoring his impact on the game.

"Jerry West was a basketball genius and a defining figure in our league for more than 60 years," NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement after his death.

"He distinguished himself not only as an NBA champion and an All-Star in all 14 of his playing seasons, but also as a consummate competitor who embraced the biggest moments."

He was drafted by the Lakers as the second overall pick in the 1960 NBA Draft and spent his entire 14-year playing career with the team.

His accolades include an NBA championship in 1972, a Finals MVP award in 1969, and numerous All-NBA and All-Defensive selections.

After retiring as a player, West continued to shape the Lakers' success as a coach and later as a general manager. He played a crucial role in assembling championship teams, including the iconic duo of Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal.

West was also the general manager of the Memphis Grizzlies and a member of the front offices for the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Clippers following his time with the Lakers. While he helped put together the Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green trio in Golden State, he is still most closely associated with the team that drafted him.

In addition to the jersey tribute, the Lakers will also celebrate West's life during their season opener on October 22 against the Minnesota Timberwolves, where they will distribute West jerseys to fans.

A statue of West stands outside Crypto.com Arena, further cementing his status as a Lakers legend.
