Vikings DC Brian Flores on ref's warning after Van Ginkel TD: 'Yeah, I was fired up'

Brian Flores was apparently like a lot of Minnesota Vikings fans on Sunday after the defense got a pick-six.

With just under 4:30 left in the third quarter of Sunday's game, Andrew Van Ginkel leaped and somehow intercepted a quick Daniel Jones pass toward the flat, then trotted into the end zone to give the Vikings a 28-6 lead.

Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell said Monday that he was approached by a referee after the play and given a sideline warning.

“Hey, just a heads up, most of your defensive staff was just in the end zone," O'Connell said the ref told him, adding, "So I got on the headset and said, ‘I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed,’” the head coach said with a big smile.

Flores, the Vikings defensive coordinator, was apparently one of those.

At his weekly press conference on Tuesday, Flores admitted he was "fired up" and was happy to see his players get excited, too.

"I tell our players, when you make a play, you should celebrate that play. It’s not easy to make plays in this league,” Flores said.

He discussed all of the things players have to deal with each week just to get to game-day and have the chance to make a play, so he loves seeing that excitement.

“I hope when people watch us, they see a group that enjoys playing together, so I get excited too, for them," Flores said. "You know, as a coach, there’s nothing more enjoyable then watching your guys have success, that’s why you’re in it, that’s why we do this, so yeah, I was fired up."

That togetherness is something O'Connell also mentioned in his weekly media availability, calling it "a pretty tight-knit group" on defense.

As for the level of excitement, the coaches aren't worried.

Flores noted, "You’d much rather say ‘woah’ than ‘sick ‘em,’” something he took from Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.

The Vikings were one of seven defenses to have multiple interceptions in Week 1 and one of just two that returned one for a touchdown. Flores' unit also allowed the fewest points in Week 1 and the seventh-fewest yards.

They'll get a much bigger test this weekend against San Francisco, but if they keep playing like that, expect to see a lot more celebration from the defense.

"Hopefully we don't get penalized," Flores said with a smile. "I'll make sure that doesn't happen."
