The WNBA experienced an explosion in popularity after the Indiana Fever drafted Caitlin Clark as the No. 1 overall pick. Adding to the phenomenon, Clark's former college rival, Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese, the No. 7 pick, entering the league at the same time.

While Clark and Reese respect each other's game and get along off the court, parts of their respective fanbases continue to fuel their rivalry with racist and misogynistic comments on social media.

During an appearance on CNBC's "The Lunch," anchor Tyler Mathisen asked WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert about how she plans to stay ahead of such hateful rhetoric. Instead of condemning abhorrent comments and protecting her players, Engelbert basically said rivalries are great for business.

On September 10, the Women's National Basketball Players Association executive director Terri Jackson shared a powerful statement on Engelbert's comments. The WNBPA's message shared on Instagram was co-signed by numerous WNBA stars, including Kelsey Plum, Napheesa Collier, Breanna Stewart, Aliyah Boston, DiJonai Carrington, and more.

Jackson wrote in part, "Here is the answer that the Commissioner should have provided to the very clear questioning regarding the racism, misogyny, and harassment experience by the Players:

"There is absolutely no place in the sport - or in life - for the vile hate, racist language, homophobic comments, and misogynistic attacks our players are facing on social media.

"This is not about rivalries or iconic personalities fueling a business model. This kind of toxic fandom should never be tolerated or left unchecked. It demands immediate action, and frankly, should've been addressed long ago."

Engelbert's comments left numerous WNBA fans and analysts appalled and disappointed, with numerous people calling for her to step down on social media.
