Mike Tomlin Gives Important Update on Russell Wilson's Injury

Russell Wilson will not get his shot at revenge against his old team when the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Denver Broncos on Sept. 15.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said they're going with Justin Fields at quarterback against the Broncos following his strong performance in their season-opening win against the Atlanta Falcons.

The 35-year-old Wilson is still nursing a calf injury, forcing him to miss their game against the Falcons.

When asked about Wilson's recovery, Tomlin gave a cautiously optimistic prognosis.

“I just visited with (Wilson), said Tomlin, as quoted by NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. "He feels better today than he did over the weekend. What that means, I don’t know as we sit here today.

"I know that we’re going to take the same approach that we take with a lot of people in terms of injury. We’ll first start with his participation and his level of participation, his quality of participation.”

A former MVP and Super Bowl champion, Wilson signed a one-year deal with the Steelers in the offseason for the veteran's minimum of $1.2 million. In August 2024, Tomlin named him the starter over the 25-year-old Fields.

Wilson had two uneventful years with the Broncos. He was released by the squad in March 2024 despite signing a massive five-year extension worth $242 million in 2022.

Fields, meanwhile, also joined the Steelers in the offseason after being traded by the Chicago Bears. He was 17-for-23 with 156 yards against the Falcons and rushed for 57 yards.
