Greg McElroy Calls Criticism of Major College Football Coach's Struggles 'Aggressive'

Auburn Tigers fans certainly weren’t pleased with the team’s unexpected 21-14 home loss to the Cal Golden Bears in Week 2, especially after a 70-point win in their home opener.

College football analyst Paul Finebaum said on “ Always College Football ” that this is not a similar situation to the frustrations coming out of Gainesville, Florida with Billy Napier. He says he doesn’t believe Freeze is on the hot seat yet, but he agreed with host Greg McElroy that criticism from fans is starting to get “aggressive.”

“The reaction to what’s going on right now at Auburn is really, really aggressive,” McElroy said.

“Calling for people to be replaced, suggesting that things need to be adjusted, and it's just two games into year two for Hugh Freeze,” he said.

Finebaum said there should be ‘“real concern” for the inconsistent play they’ve seen out of the Tigers in the past two years. He went as far as to say they’ve looked “terrible” on the field recently.

McElroy said their performance against the Golden Bears is following a concerning trend.

“His teams will play up to the best teams, but for whatever reason, there’s always a game or two on the schedule that are flat-out unexplainable,” McElroy said. “If they want them to be the giant killer, Hugh Freeze might be the best man for the job, but consistency has not been something he’s experienced even dating back to his time at Liberty and Ole Miss.”

The Tigers will host another inferior opponent on paper in Week 3 against the New Mexico Lobos. Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday, September 14 at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
