Chiefs' Andy Reid Reveals Thought on New 'Dynamic' Kickoff

During the offseason, the NFL rules and safety committee came up with a new way for teams to kickoff to address the number of high-speed collisions associated with the play.

Needless to say, an old school guy like Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid is not a fan. For every kickoff against the Baltimore Ravens, the long-time coach just had Harrison Butker kick it out of the end zone.

“We just kind of went off the stats that we had, and we felt that that was the best way to go," Reid explained. "In a perfect world, if you can kick it right to the goal line and kind of skip it down in there, that’d be great.

“As you saw in the games yesterday, you saw people trying to do that and then it bounces out of bounds, or they get it before the end zone line and goal line and then they return it for a big return.

“Then, you look at vice versa, they’re saying, ‘Well we had a chance to return it, we got it past the 30 (yard line),’ that’s just kind of what it is. You got to be spot on with the kick and that’s a lot to ask there.”

The average return throughout the preseason was 28 yards. So, the Chiefs’ philosophy may be to just kick it through the endzone, give their opponents 2 yards and avoid the potential for a big return and big hits.

Coach Reid is always a step ahead of the competition in just about everything. As the season continues, more teams will likely follow this strategy as well.
