The Oklahoma City Thunder have engineered a rebuild so striking that teams are coming to discover a new blueprint. The NBA universe has rightly lauded Thunder architect Sam Presti for his sweeping contributions in turning the franchise into a household name in a few short seasons.

Spearheading this incredible turnaround is an impressive treasure of assets, which continues to expand every year. So far, the Thunder have expertly converted their assets into building a championship contender.

Where OKC ranks in asset collection

Oklahoma City has become the poster child of organically-built rosters. However, they fell short to the San Antonio Spurs in ESPN insider Bobby Marks’ ranking of the teams with the most first-round draft picks.

Here is a deeper look at the draft assets the Thunder own:

    • Unprotected first-rounder via LA Clippers (2026)
    • Top-4 protected via Houston (2026)
    • Top-10 protected via Utah (2025, top-8 in 2026)
    • Top-14 protected via Miami (2025, unprotected in 2026)
    • Top-6 protected via Philadelphia (2025, top-4 protected in 2026 and 2027)
    • Top-5 protected via Denver (2027, top-5 protected in 2028)
    • Top-5 protected via Denver (2029, if first conveyed in 2027, top-5 protected in 2030 if first conveyed by 2028)
    • LA Clippers (2025 and 2027) [Swap rights]
    • Houston (2025, top-10 protected) [Swap rights]
    • Dallas (2028) [Swap rights]
    • Trade-able first-round picks: 10

"It was hard not to keep Oklahoma City out of the top spot, but protections on first-round picks that are owed to the Thunder have them right behind San Antonio," wrote Marks . "Because of the six first-round picks acquired from other teams and two years of swaps with the Clippers, the Thunder could select in the lottery and also finish each season with one of the best records in the NBA."

The Spurs, apart from having a deep wardrobe of assets, are especially intriguing to watch. As a team set up to be the Thunder’s rivals over the coming years, it’ll be interesting to see how they build out the roster and surround Victor Wembanyama with the necessary pieces to contend for a title.

San Antonio could look to go down the same route Oklahoma City took with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. They’ll potentially look to strike gold on their draft picks, following the Thunder’s blueprint, while Chris Paul — like he ironically was in OKC with SGA — holds down the fort and helps keep the silver and black relevant for a season or two.
