The Cleveland Browns are facing an early test of their depth just one week into the season, as four key players have been placed on injured reserve. Linebackers Mohamoud Diabate (hip) and Tony Fields II (ankle), defensive tackle Maurice Hurst II (ankle), and safety Juan Thornhill (calf) will all miss a minimum of four games, putting added pressure on Cleveland’s reserves as they head into a critical stretch of the season.

To address the gaps , the Browns have signed wide receiver Kadarius Toney, cornerback Mike Ford Jr., linebacker Khaleke Hudson, and defensive tackle Sam Kamara. Additionally, defensive tackle Siaki Ika, tight end Geoff Swaim, and linebacker Luiji Vilain were added to the practice squad. With upcoming games against the Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Giants, Las Vegas Raiders, and Washington Commanders, Cleveland will rely on its depth to maintain competitiveness.

Possibly stepping up in the absence of Hurst , who was a standout pass rusher in the defensive tackle room, is Quinton Jefferson. A proven performer, Jefferson recorded six sacks, 29 quarterback pressures, and 22 run stops with the Jets in 2023. He is expected to play a more prominent role, especially against a formidable Jacksonville offense.

Linebacker Devin Bush also has a significant opportunity following the injuries to Diabate and Fields. A former starter with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Bush aims to secure a long-term role with the Browns. He will be tested immediately as Cleveland prepares to face Jacksonville quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

Though the Browns face challenges with these injuries , they are well-prepared with depth throughout the roster. The team’s resilience will be crucial as they aim to avoid starting the season 0-2 for the first time under head coach Kevin Stefanski. This week's game against the Jaguars will be a crucial test for Cleveland's reserve talent to prove their worth on the field.
