Commanders Debuting New (Old) Uniform Look vs. Giants

Maybe gold will bring back the glory.

Adding to their "fresh coat of paint" on a new era in Washington football, the Commanders on Sunday will dust off their classic gold pants for their home opener and NFC East game against the New York Giants. The Commanders have a new owner (Josh Harris), new general managers (Adam Peters), new head coach (Dan Quinn),  new quarterback (Jayden Daniels) and even a new name for its stadium (Northwest).

So why a new (old) uniform look?

The team last wore gold pants in 2018, back when they were still the Redskins. The franchise debuted the gold in 1933 and wore them regularly through 1979. They've been worn sporadically in recent years as part of throwback looks. They're wearing them Sunday against the Giants who, thankfully, won't sport those hideous 100th anniversary uniforms they wore last week.

Both teams are 0-1 and desperate for a win, in whatever colors necessary.

Though the gold pants conjure images of tradition and success with the organization, Washington's three Super Bowl wins - XVII, XXII and XXVI - all came wearing white jerseys and burgundy pants.

The Redskins wore gold in their loss to the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl VII.
