The arrival of Caitlin Clark as the Indiana Fever's No. 1 overall pick has brought unprecedented new attention on the WNBA.

Clark burst onto the WNBA scene as one of the league's greatest players in her rookie season, shattering several all-time WNBA records en route to her first career All-Star selection. The former Iowa superstar is the clear frontrunner to win Rookie of the Year, averaging 19.1 points and a league-leading 8.4 assists per game in her debut season.

Unfortunately, the narratives around Clark extend well past her impact on the basketball court. Her meteoric rise to superstardom has also come with discussions about race and politics.

Longtime sports media analyst Skip Bayless recently admitted that he felt "guilty" about his support for Clark upon her highly-publicized WNBA entrance.

“So here came this white girl from Iowa. And I started watching the WNBA much more closely than I ever have,” he said on The Skip Bayless Show.

“And I started to think, deep down in my psyche, ‘Wait a second, she’s really good.’ But I’ll be the first to admit, I felt guilty saying so on TV or on social media."

"I did not want to look like this red state white guy cheering for this red state white girl," Bayless continued. "Our country feels split enough racially already. I didn’t want to pour gasoline on that fire."

"I have no idea what her politics or religion are because she has carefully, and I say smartly, avoided taking any rookie year stance because she is already such a lightning rod," Bayless said.

"But obviously, I know what a powerful point of pride basketball has been to the Black community in this country, Black men and women obviously have been routinely and consistently better at basketball.”

Clark and the Fever fell to the reigning-champion Las Vegas Aces on Wednesday night. These two WNBA playoff teams will face off in a rematch at Indiana's Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Friday evening.
