The Los Angeles Dodgers are preparing for the return of reliever Joe Kelly, who has been sidelined since August 30 due to right shoulder inflammation.

Kelly's comeback is anticipated next week, particularly during the team's series against the Miami Marlins. This news is particularly significant as the Dodgers navigate injuries that have left them with ten pitchers on the injured list.

Kelly has had an eventful season, marked by a prior two-month absence due to a strained right shoulder.

In his appearances this year, he has recorded a 1-1 record along with a 5.20 ERA, striking out 30 batters across 27.2 innings. However, his control has been a concern; he has allowed four home runs and issued 14 walks.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts stated that Kelly will be making rehabilitation appearances for Triple-A Oklahoma City before officially returning.

The last time Kelly took the mound, he faced trouble, conceding two runs, three hits, and two walks in a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, which further pressured the team's bullpen that night.

Clayton Kershaw expressed his disappointment regarding that situation. He told MLB.com’s Michael Reynolds . “But the team did amazing, they battled and grinded. And the bullpen is hanging after today, and I’m disappointed that I was the culprit of that, but they did an unbelievable job.”

Upon his return, Kelly is expected to be utilized in low-leverage situations as he eases back into the team's rotation.

The Dodgers currently sit five games ahead of the nearest rival, the Arizona Diamondbacks, in the National League West standings, showcasing their position as they aim for a strong finish to the season.
