The Michigan Wolverines are currently facing a tough season, with their offense ranking notably low across various statistical categories. After two games, the Wolverines find themselves placed at No. 120 in total offense, No. 113 in passing, and No. 101 in rushing. Given these dire statistics, it’s clear that a shift in strategy is imperative if the team hopes to secure a berth in the College Football Playoff.

The Importance of a Dominant Rushing Game

Head Coach Sherrone Moore has publicly acknowledged the need for a dominant rushing attack. He stated, “For us to do that, we’ve got to be better running the football.” This seems to echo a team-wide sentiment that if Michigan hopes to succeed, they must revert to a physical style of play rooted in running the ball effectively. The current rushing play percentage of 47.90% ranks the team at No. 84, a significant drop from their consistent top-20 rankings in previous seasons.

    Key Players and Their Impact

Michigan's backfield boasts talented running backs, including Kalel Mullings, who is averaging an impressive 5.6 yards per carry, and Donovan Edwards, who is at 3.6 yards per carry. Despite their individual performances suggesting the potential for a robust ground game, the effectiveness hinges on the offensive line regaining its previous form. With their run-blocking grade currently at 77.2, there’s an urgent need for the offensive line to elevate its performance to help revitalize the entire offense.

As noted by Offensive Coordinator Kirk Campbell, “We still need to be a run-first team.” This strong commitment to a ground-oriented strategy indicates that Michigan recognizes what has historically worked for them – a smashmouth approach that has been pivotal in securing their three consecutive Big Ten Championship titles.

    Leadership and Team Philosophy

Mullings has stepped up as a leader among the running backs, even dubbing the group the "lighthouse" of the team, suggesting they aim to lead by example and establish dominance on the field. It’s clear that this team is aware of its rich history and the necessity of returning to a more physically imposing style of play.

    A Call for Action

The Wolverines' struggles on offense present an urgent call for action as they seek to turn around their season. By reallocating their focus towards a run-heavy approach, Michigan not only has an opportunity to address its existing challenges but also a chance to reestablish its identity in a fiercely competitive landscape.

Nearly every key player needs to step up his game. If they don't, other more hungry players will.

I am worried about the defence. They lost their strength and conditioning coach. They are not playing at the same level as last year. They look like they are gassed midway through the 1st half. What a let down.
