Kirk Herbstreit Names One of College Football's Most 'Underrated' Fanbases

There are very few college campuses that have never had “College GameDay” visit. The Illinois Fighting Illini, Maryland Terrapins, Syracuse Orange, Rutgers Scarlet Knights, Virginia Cavaliers and California Golden Bears have yet to host “GameDay.”

GameDay will be in Columbia, South Carolina, as the South Carolina Gamecocks take on the No. 16 LSU Tigers. Kirk Herbstreit will be on campus with the rest of the cast of “College GameDay.”

Herbstreit appeared on a recent episode of "The Pat McAfee Show" to preview the matchup. He called South Carolina fans "underrated" and highlighted their passion.

"...South Carolina, they fill up their stadium," Herbstreit said. "I remember a year when they didn't win a game, and they were sold out every game. They are a really underrated, passionate fanbase. They are really wound up that College GameDay's gonna be there. They're really wound up about the Gamecocks knocking off Kentucky. They're excited now that they got LSU."

Week 3 will be the eighth time the Gamecocks have hosted College GameDay. Their last time hosting was nearly 10 years ago.

LSU and South Carolina have met regularly as members of the SEC. Week 3 is the 22nd all-time meeting between the Gamecocks and Tigers. LSU currently leads the all-time series 19-2-1. South Carolina's last win over LSU was in 1994 in Baton Rouge.

Shane Beamer and South Carolina stunned Kentucky in Lexington in Week 2, winning 31-6. LSU lost its season opener against the USC Trojans 27-20. However, the Tigers rebounded in Week 2 with a 44-21 victory over Nicholls.

South Carolina is now led under center by LaNorris Sellers. According to the On3 Industry Rankings , Sellers was a former four-star quarterback from the 2023 class.

The Gamecocks bolstered their roster with transfer portal additions like former Arkansas Razorbacks running back Raheim "Rocket" Sanders, former Oklahoma Sooners offensive tackle Aaryn Parks and former Pittsburgh Panthers linebacker Bangally Kamara.
