South Alabama gave head coach Major Applewhite his first win in dominant fashion on Thursday night against FCS program Northwestern State.

The Jaguars pounded Northwestern State 87-10, with four different players scoring rushing touchdowns and quarterback Gio Lopez tossing four more. South Alabama also scored on defense and special teams.

It was the most points scored by an FBS team since 1991. It also set the Sun Belt record for points scored in a game.

"It shows what we're capable of," South Alabama safety Jaden Voisin said after the game . "No matter what the opponent. Doesn't matter who it is. We can play like that and we can do that to any team as long as we come out like we did tonight."

SportsCenter with Scott Van Pelt ran the highlights in fast forward to fit them all in. It landed as his "Best Thing I Saw Today" segment.

"They shortened the fourth quarter, which was reasonable because the score was already unreasonable," Van Pelt said.

The opportunity with South Alabama is Applewhite's first as a head coach since he was fired by Houston in 2018. Fans were quick to recall that the Cougars fired Applewhite after a 70-14 loss in the Armed Forces Bowl.

"Major Applewhite thinks this cancels out the Armed Forces Bowl," one fan said .

Another commenter chimed in : "Regardless of the context about Northwestern State, it’s unreal to me a Major Applewhite coached team did this."

Northwestern State has had a rough start to the season. The Demons are now 0-3 and have given up 186 points in those three losses.
