Kliff Kingsbury Facing Backlash Over Recent Jayden Daniels Admission

Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury is catching heat over one play he called for Jayden Daniels in Week 1.

On Sunday, the Commanders trailed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 37-14 with just over a minute left in the 4th quarter at Raymond James Stadium.

With Washington facing 3rd-and-goal, Daniels kept the ball and ran up the middle for a second rushing touchdown in his NFL debut.

The play came in garbage time and didn't change the result of the game, which Washington lost 37-20. But it did give Commanders fans one more reason to be excited about their potential franchise QB.

Kingsbury was asked about Daniels' second TD during his postgame press conference. The 45-year-old OC admitted that Daniels completely improvised the play, which Kingsbury called one of his "worst."

"I called one of the worst plays I've ever called in my career," said Kingsbury. "And he just took it and ran into the end zone."

While Kingsbury was probably just propping up his rookie QB, the comments didn't exactly evoke confidence out of Commanders supporters. Fans generally don't want their OCs calling their "worst" plays and putting the onus on the QB to freestyle.

"hey kliff, don’t do that again. tighten up."

"Thanks for saving your worst play ever for us."

"This is not making me feel great about Kingsbury, who I expected better from."

"glad he knows it. he won’t be here long."

Kingsbury said that the original play was meant to be a speed option, which the Commanders rookie appeared to be running to start the play. But Daniels, who was highly touted out of LSU for his feet, found a simpler way to score.

Daniels threw for 184 yards, going 17-for-24 in his first taste of NFL action. He also rushed for 88 yards with two rushing TDs on 16 carries.
