One New York Yankees pitcher praised his teammate after the team’s latest victory.

Nestor Cortes started the Yankees’ game on Thursday, and Clay Holmes recorded the final two outs in the team’s 2-1 win over the Boston Red Sox. The reliever entered the game in the tenth inning and received a mixed reaction from the crowd.

"The ovation sucks,” Cortes told reporters about the boos that Yankees fans gave to Holmes when he entered the game. “Me and Trevy [Jose Trevino] were talking about it last week when we're going to need Clay the most, he's gonna come through for us.”

Holmes needed just six pitches to record the final two outs of the tenth inning. He earned his third win of the season as Juan Soto’s RBI single in the bottom half of the inning ended the game.

“Clay has it in him,” Cortes added about his teammate. “Every time he gets the ball we’re fully confident in him that he’s going to go out there and get outs.”

Holmes has had an up-and-down season for the Yankees. He was named to the All-Star Game for the second time in his career and is tied for third in the American League with 29 saves. The closer also leads MLB with 12 blown saves, putting him one away from tying Dave Righetti for the franchise’s single-season record set back in 1987.
