    Aubrey Good From 75 Yards!?

    By Adam Schultz,

The Dallas Cowboys have an offensive weapon that not many other NFL teams do ... a near-automatic kicker - who can seemingly do it from the longest possible range.

Brandon Aubrey has had perhaps the best start to a career kicking-wise as one can remember. Having won the kicking role back in training camp last offseason, Aubrey was a huge weapon for the Dallas offense, going 10/10 on field goals from 50+ yards and being 36/38 for the year.

As the Cowboys opened up the season in Cleveland, just before halftime, head coach Mike McCarthy was ready for Aubrey to attempt a field goal from 71 yards. While special-teams coordinator John Fassel eventually got McCarthy to punt instead of kick in fear of a return touchdown, it does make you wonder about Aubrey's range.

As for QB Dak Prescott - the man who first nicknamed the smooth kicker "Butter'' - he thinks Aubrey would be good from even further.

“I give him 75, especially indoor,” Prescott said with a smile. “It's crazy, it's a blessing, not anything I take for granted, me I want to take a little bit off his plate and score touchdowns you know rest his leg a little bit. Let him just kick some of those easy PATs, but I know if we need him, he's going to step up and make the play.”

Aubrey, in his first game of the year, was dare we say it ... perfect. He went 4/4 on field goals and 3/3 on PATs with his longest being a 57-yard bullet .

With the Cowboys having a kicker who has dynamite in his right football, anywhere from the opposing 40-yard line is "within" his range, Dallas won't feel pressure to get closer for him to be comfortable to take a long-range kick.

It's quite a story. A few years ago, Aubrey was a kid from North Texas who'd never really played football but was a pro soccer star. He gave kicking a shot in the UFL and became a standout there ... and now he's in the conversation as "best in the world'' at this new job.

Of course, as Prescott alluded to, he wants touchdowns and doesn't want to see Aubrey have to kick at all. But it is a nice fallback to have a kicker who can dial up the launch codes from a distance. ... from 66. Or 71. Or ... who knows?
