Greg McElroy Warns Major College Football Program Ahead of Week 3

We're heading into Week 3 of the college football season and there have already been some big upsets. First, it was Florida State in Week 0 losing to Georgia Tech, then in Week 2 we watched Northern Illinois pull off an upset win over Notre Dame.

We could see plenty more upsets this year based on how the season is playing out early. Even Penn State nearly fell victim in Week 2 after fighting for their lives against Bowling Green.

However, with Week 3 on the horizon, ESPN's Greg McElroy has some concern for one major program in particular. During his latest episode of "Always College Football," McElroy sends a warning to Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish.

After just coming off of an upset loss, McElroy poses several questions for Notre Dame to overcome their Week 3 matchup against Purdue. There are several areas of concern, but the most alarming is how poorly the offensive line has performed so far this season. All of the concerns together create an interesting situation for Freeman and Notre Dame.

Notre Dame's defense has played relatively well so far. Through two games, they've allowed just 29 total points. NIU has scored the most points on the Fighting Irish so far with 16.

Offensively, Notre Dame has been a mess. They can't get anything going through the air. Through two games, starting quarterback Riley Leonard has only recorded 321 total passing yards and two interceptions. The Fighting Irish have yet to record a passing touchdown this season.

McElroy also notes how well Purdue quarterback, Hudson Card, has played. Although that's true, the popular sports analyst has his doubts about Card and the Boilermakers offense.

Purdue is coming off of a bye week after lighting up Indiana State 49-0 in Week 1. Card finished that contest throwing 24/25 for 273 yards and four touchdowns. Notre Dame has the talent to slow him down but the Fighting Irish could be in for a dog fight like they were against NIU.

With that in mind, Notre Dame is 8-0 against Purdue in their last eight matchups. The Fighting Irish is also a -9.5 favorite to win the game, according to FanDuel. But considering they're coming off of an upset loss in Week 2, McElroy and the college football world are a bit wary.

Notre Dame faces off against the Boilermakers at Purdue on Saturday, September 13. Kickoff is at 3:30 P.M. Eastern and the Fighting Irish hope to secure a win to maintain their top-25 ranking.
