Shedeur Sanders knows the spotlight is intense, and his words can be easily misinterpreted. After Colorado's 28-10 loss to Nebraska, Sanders found himself in the middle of a media storm due to comments he made about his pick-six. When he called the play “a rookie mistake,” many assumed he was calling out freshman receiver Drelon Miller, who was the intended target on the play.

Sanders, however, was quick to set the record straight. In a video posted by Overtime, the quarterback clarified his comments, explaining that he wasn’t pointing fingers at Miller. “I didn’t say the rookie made a mistake,” Sanders stated. “I was referring to my decision-making, calling it a rookie mistake on my part.” He acknowledged that his wording left room for misinterpretation but felt frustrated that his words were twisted. “I think they just took it and ran with it whatever way they wanted to, you know, what would probably get them the most clicks or whatever.”

Despite the media noise, Sanders has remained composed, recognizing the need for clearer communication moving forward. “"I can understand and that's definitely my fault for even giving them room to even be able to play tricks on words," he admitted. But Sanders made it clear that his responsibility was to his team, not to engaging in social media debates.

The Buffaloes quarterback did take accountability for his play, calling the decision “childish” and recognizing it as an error that can’t happen at this level. Though the game against Nebraska saw Sanders sacked five times and throw his second interception of the season, his performance still stands out. Through two games, he has completed 68.1% of his passes, racking up 689 yards and five touchdowns.

However, the bigger issue for Colorado seems to be their lack of a reliable running game. Averaging just 37.5 rushing yards per game, it’s clear the Buffs need more balance to support Sanders in the pocket.

As they prepare for the Rocky Mountain Showdown against Colorado State, Sanders and his teammates have a prime opportunity to bounce back. The rivalry game offers a chance for redemption and a fresh narrative. While critics may have jumped on Sanders’ words, the quarterback remains focused on what matters most—improving his game and leading Colorado to success.

Bullshit, he’s backtracking because of all of the negative publicity. If he is willing to blame his entire offensive line for not being able to sustain a run game and question his defense for not putting any pressure on the Nebraska quarterback, it’s obvious he intended that his remark “rookie mistake “ to be directed at the receiver (who is a freshman-Rookie).
